EA Confirms That A New Battlefield Is Coming In 2016

by Mike Futter on Jul 30, 2015 at 12:05 PM

Unsurprisingly, EA has confirmed that a new Battlefield game will be released in 2016. The news comes from the company’s first quarter fiscal year 2016 earnings call.

Responding to an inquiry from an analyst, chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen discussed the company’s strategy for core titles. "What we have said is that our intention over the next couple of years is to have a first-person shooter as one of the core titles," he explained. "This year, obviously, it's Star Wars Battlefront. Next year, it's another Battlefield title."

EA has also reconfirmed that Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, and Unravel are all due in the company’s final quarter of the fiscal year (January through March 2016). Also coming in this fiscal year are: FIFA 16, Madden NFL 16, NBA Live 16, NHL 16, Need for Speed, and Star Wars Battlefront.

EA also suggests it has other new titles in the pipeline, including a new mobile game. The company says that its strong first quarter was driven in part by growing uptake of The Sims 4. EA anticipates that Star Wars Battlefront will sell 9 to 10 million units this year.

Our Take
EA also discussed plans for its Star Wars license, and in addition to Visceral, the company expectedly will be springboarding off the movies coming over the next few years. As for Battlefield, this is absolutely no surprise, and I expect it to be a core, numbered title. We sure wouldn’t mind a return to Bad Company, though.
