Gearbox’s Pitchford Is Open To Outside Developer Handling New Duke Nukem

by Mike Futter on Jul 15, 2015 at 05:33 AM

Gearbox currently has its hands full developing Battleborn for this coming winter and another unannounced project. Speaking at the Develop: Brighton conference though, CEO Randy Pitchford says the studio hasn’t forgotten Duke Nukem.

The studio acquired the property from 3D Realms in 2010, finally releasing Duke Nukem Forever after nearly 15 years in development in 2011. It wasn’t received terribly well, and many thought that the days of Duke were in the past.

At Develop though, Pitchford says that Gearbox has done some prototyping on a new entry. However, he believes it would be faster if the right development partner came along to shepherd the project.

Is the world ready for more Duke Nukem? We might never know, unless some intrepid studio steps up to the plate to team up with Gearbox to make it happen.

Our Take
Raunchy humor is a delicate thing, and sensibilities have changed since Duke was popular. He’ll need a bit of a makeover to both keep the edge and fit with the times.
