'I Know They’re Doing The Last Of Us 2,' Says Nolan North

by Mike Futter on Jun 30, 2015 at 03:20 AM

Yesterday, we reported on comments made by actor Nolan North in relation to Uncharted and Visceral’s Star Wars game. Today, another nugget from his talk at Metrocon has been revealed.

Toward the end of the video, North fields a question about whether he’s working on any other projects with Naughty Dog. In addition to playing Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series, North had a smaller role in The Last of Us.

“I know they’re doing The Last of Us 2,” he says. However, given the events of that game, the character he played in the original won’t be making an appearance.

Last weekend was also Indy Popcon, where Naughty Dog lead actor Troy Baker made an appearance. He was asked where he thought the story might go in a follow-up.

“I know nothing. I don’t know if we’re going to do another one or not. If we do, I trust Neil [Druckmann] and Bruce [Straley] and everyone at Naughty Dog to tell a story that needs to be told. I could go either way, though. I think it could stand alone as just it’s own thing. Like Journey, the game not the band nor the actual trip, didn’t need a sequel. It stood alone as a piece of art.”

He goes on to talk about Joel’s evolution throughout the 2013 hit, from father to, 20 years later, a man who has become a brute. However, there are pieces of the story he wants to know more about.

“There’s a part of me that wants to see those 20 years,” he says. “There’s also so much about Ellie I want to know.”

As far as we’ve heard from Naughty Dog, a sequel to The Last of Us isn’t entirely off the table. In February 2014, Druckmann mentioned a potential follow-up. "We have started brainstorming some stuff,” Druckmann says. “To be honest, some of them are sequel ideas, and some of them are brand new IP - we've spent the last few weeks brainstorming new IP.”

We’ve reached out to Sony for comment. Should we receive a response, we’ll update this story.

Our Take
It was great to hear Baker talk about the validity of The Last of Us standing by itself as a complete story. I’m in that camp, and while there might be more story to tell in that world, the questions left at the end feel like comfortable unknowns.

There is no doubt that The Last of Us 2, whatever shape it might take, would print money. The question is whether Druckmann and Straley have more to tell. Without them demanding the project, I think it would feel hollow.

As for North’s comments, we know from earlier statements that ideas for a sequel exist. Whether he is commenting on that or more complete knowledge of work being done is unclear. Regardless, we likely won’t hear anything concrete until Druckmann and Straley ship Uncharted 4 next year.
