Report: Midway’s 1980s Arcade Hit Rampage To Become Movie Starring The Rock

by Mike Futter on Jun 23, 2015 at 08:55 AM

There have been some curious choices for video game-related films over the past few decades. Super Mario Bros. is strange. Double Dragon is campy. Uwe Boll’s movies are… something else. Next summer, The Rock is going to see if he can bring magic to a 1980s classic.

I used to love going to the arcade to play Midway’s Rampage. Ralph (the giant werewolf) was my favorite, but there was no real difference between him and George (the towering ape) and Lizzie (the enormous lizard). They all punched down buildings and ate people with grace (provided you jumped from the edifice before it collapsed beneath you).

The only thing the game was missing was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to fight the monsters, or so New Line believes. He’s reportedly starring in a film adaptation of the game in collaboration with members of the team that brought The Rock’s latest movie, San Andreas, to theaters.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Johnson will begin filming after completion of Fast & The Furious 8. No director is attached yet, but the script is reportedly being written by Ryan Engle (Non-Stop).
