Report: Destiny: The Taken King Includes New Subclasses, Raid, Larger Price Point

by Mike Futter on Jun 09, 2015 at 02:09 AM

Last night, extensive details regarding Destiny's next expansion, The Taken King, were uncovered. The report runs down class changes, a new raid, a larger price point, and a release date.

The Taken King was first discovered due to a Bungie trademark filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Last week, multiple images of a case of Red Bull appeared baring the name and logo.

Kotaku reports that it received a marketing sheet detailing a number of highlights, which it corroborated with additional sources. Included in the document are additional subclasses for all three primary classes (Warlock, Hunter, and Titan).

Currently, each class only has two subclasses, meaning that one of the elemental damages (Arc, Solar, Void) is missing for each. The Taken King will rectify that (with complete details about how available in the Kotaku report).

Further, the expansion will add another raid against the Hive. This time, players will be tackling Oryx, the father of Crota (the focus of The Dark Below's raid).

Kotaku reports that the expansion will cost $39.99 (twice as much as the previous expansions) and will be released on September 15, approximately one week after Destiny's one-year anniversary.

We've reached out to Activision and will update should we receive a response.

Our Take
At $39.99, The Taken King needs to be bigger and better. If there are improvements that seep into the vanilla game, rectifying major issues that persist in the experience, that would help sell it (though might not be possible if the player base is split).

I suspect Activision will be speaking about this at length next week at E3. Hopefully, the added context for the details now reported help us better understand the $39.99 price point.
