PlayStation Now Game Streaming Available On Some Samsung Smart Televisions

by Mike Futter on Jun 09, 2015 at 09:40 AM

Sony has announced that the PlayStation Now game streaming service is going outside the family for the first time. If you own a Samsung smart television, you may have access to a library of PlayStation 3 titles for rent.

According to Sony's list of compatible devices (which has not yet been fully updated), service was planned for televisions released as recently as 2014. If you have one, you'll be able to connect a Dual Shock 4 controller and access PlayStation 3 games via individual rental or subscription (pricing details).

All of the features present on other platforms are available. This includes trophy support, online gaming, and cloud-based game saves.

Our Take
If promoted to compatible hardware owners, this could be a competitive advantage for Sony. I own a Samsung television (though it isn't compatible), and the Smart TV functions are bit sluggish. If that's been improved such that "time to game" isn't too long, it's a way to reach casual players that only costs consumers an entry fee of $60 for a Dual Shock 4 instead of a full console purchase.
