SanDisk To Release New Solid State Drives Priced "On Par" With HDDs

by Bryan Vore on May 27, 2015 at 12:02 PM

Anyone with even a passing knowledge of computers or gaming consoles knows that solid state drives are better than traditional hard disk drives in every way except one: price. Now SanDisk hopes to eliminate that issue with a new line of SSDs priced to move.

According to SanDisk, the new Z400s "outperforms HDDs by 20×1, while providing 5x the reliability with 20x lower average power consumption, all at a price point on par with HDDs2."

The Z400s will be available in a variety of of configurations including mSATA, 2.5” SATA, and M.2 (2242 and 2280). Storage capacity comes in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB.

SanDisk says that the Z400s is "sampling with customers immediately," but offers no public release timeframe nor specific pricing at this time.

Our take
If these SSDs are really as cheap as they sound, it could accelerate the extinction of HDDs faster than it was already going to happen. The only problem is the limited capacity. If we were talking 1 or 2 terabytes, then these would be a slam dunk for replacing or augmenting storage on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
