InXile's The Bard’s Tale IV Begins Crowdfunding On Thirtieth Anniversary Of Original

by Mike Futter on May 18, 2015 at 03:24 AM

InXile has set the kick-off date for its next crowdfunding endeavor. The Bard’s Tale IV Kickstarter campaign will launch on June 2, the 30th anniversary of the original title’s release.

Unlike 2004’s console and PC The Bard’s Tale, which was an action RPG, The Bard’s Tale IV follows in the footsteps of the original trilogy. It will feature a first-person perspective for dungeon-crawling.

InXile will be building the title on Unreal Engine 4, with a single image available so far (above). InXile has not yet divulged the campaign goal or anticipated delivery date for the title.

Our Take
With Wasteland 2 complete and delivered (and an improved version en route as a free upgrade) and Torment: Tides of Numenera underway, inXile has crafted a business model around crowdfunding. Brian Fargo and his team aren’t alone, as we’ve already seen Harebrained Schemes find its footing with the concept.

This is the natural evolution of Kickstarter in gaming, but it requires transparency and delivering on promises in order to succeed. InXile has offered both in its previous efforts.
