Take-Two Has Shipped 2.5 Million Evolve Copies, 25 Million In Borderlands Series

by Mike Futter on May 18, 2015 at 11:20 AM

During its earnings call today, Take-Two added some additional detail about the performance of its titles. The company has divulged shipment numbers for the Borderlands series and Evolve.

Gearbox’s shooter franchise is responsible for shipments amounting to 25 million units. Evolve, which launched in February of this year, has 2.5 million copies in circulation (including those in retail channels). Approximately 20 percent of shipped Evolve copies were sold digitally.

Our Take
In the case of software, it’s much harder to correlate shipped units to sold copies. Despite this, it’s important to understand that as far as a publisher is concerned, shipped copies are sold copies. The retailer has purchased them.

In the case of Borderlands and Grand Theft Auto, it’s clear those  franchises aren’t going anywhere. As for Evolve, those numbers are solid, but at this point may not warrant a sequel (though Take-Two says it will be a "key long-term franchise.") If the game takes off in the eSports arena though, it could have a much longer burn and inspire more entries.
