Nintendo Boss Iwata Skipping E3 For Second Straight Year

by Matt Bertz on May 18, 2015 at 01:45 PM

Last year, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata missed E3 for health reasons. This year he's skipping the annual video game gala for pressing business.

Today IGN reported that the Big N boss is staying behind, leaving others to lead the charge. “Nintendo’s focus for E3 this year will be showcasing the many games we have coming for both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS," read a statement offered to IGN. "Mr. Miyamoto and other members of our development team will be in Los Angeles to explain these games and the unique experiences that each offers. Mr. Iwata’s focus in this period will be on other areas of our business that require his presence in Japan.”

Our Take
Many console publishers use E3 as a place to do business within the industry, but given Nintendo's newfound focus on creating an alliance with mobile company DeNA, perhaps Iwata is better served overseeing that delicate process. Given that Nintendo has abandoned live press conferences in favor of pre-taped Nintendo Direct videos, there' still a chance Iwata can leave his imprint on the yearly gathering.
