Oculus Rift Will Launch For Consumers In First Quarter Of 2016

by Mike Futter on May 06, 2015 at 02:10 PM

Oculus has announced the long-awaited release window for its consumer virtual reality head-mounted display. Pre-orders are scheduled to start later in 2015, but price has yet to be revealed.

Details are still early, as Oculus has yet to reveal specific hardware and software specifications (though the former are coming soon). The company has also been quietly working on its own made-for-VR games, which will be announced shortly.

One of the big questions that has been lingering, that of a custom input mechanism discussed at different points during the Rift’s development, will also be unveiled soon.

We’ll continue to share details as they are available.

Our Take
If Valve and HTC hold to their release plans, the Oculus will not be the first major head-mounted display to market. With multiple competitors comes push for innovation and improvements for users. Virtual reality enthusiasts have a lot to look forward to.

The question that remains is "true cost" of owning a virtual reality display. The specifications will help us understand what kind of PC we'll need to make something like this a reality in our homes.
