World Of Warcraft Subscription Tokens Now Live

by Mike Futter on Apr 07, 2015 at 09:23 AM

In March, Blizzard announced a new way for World of Warcraft players to pay their monthly subscription fees. Tokens mirror EVE Online’s PLEX system, allowing players to trade gold at the auction house for trinkets worth one month of game time.

The flip side is that players can purchase the tokens for $20 and sell them, essentially providing a safe, gold farmer-free way of purchasing in-game gold with real money. The tokens went live yesterday.

Blizzard set the opening auction price for them at 30,000 gold, though players report that number has increased. How this impacts the WoW economy long-term is something we’ll need to wait to and see as these become more common.

Our Take
The Game Informer editors that play WoW tell me that the 30,000 gold is likely going to be attainable for regular players. However, casual fans might have a harder time funding their subscription using only this method.
