Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth Is The Second Title To Require The New 3DS

by Mike Futter on Apr 02, 2015 at 02:41 AM

Yesterday, we received an odd and slightly humorous missive about the impending release of Binding of Isaac: Rebirth on more platforms. Unfortunately, the developers were unable or unwilling to confirm it wasn’t an April Fools joke, so we held off on reporting it.

Now that the most adorable (read: terrible) day of the year on the internet is behind us, we’ve received additional confirmation that at least some of the details are correct. Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is coming to Xbox One, Wii U, and New 3DS.

Yes, you read that correctly. You’ll need a New 3DS if you want to play it on the go on a Nintendo platform (it’s already available on Vita). This makes The Binding of Isaac only the second title announced to require Nintendo's latest handheld revision (the first being Xenoblade Chronicles 3D).

According to Tyrone Rodriguez, founder of Nicalis and one-half of the Binding of Isaac team (along with Edmund McMillen), the game is not censored in any way. If you happen to visit the official website, you’ll see information to the contrary. We assume this is all part of an April Fools joke.

Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is due on all three platforms some time in the next couple of months. For more on the title, check out our coverage of it on other platforms.

Our Take
This is a great example of why real announcements shouldn’t be obfuscated by April Fools pranks. We received a number of tips yesterday that made it clear that the news was real. We’re still not sure about some pieces of the Binding of Isaac news, but feel confident about it coming to other platforms and that the New 3DS is required. We’ll have to wait for additional detail on release timing to confirm that part.
