Reader Discussion: Do You Still Enjoy Turn-Based RPGs?

by Kimberley Wallace on Mar 25, 2015 at 01:00 PM

Lately, more RPGs are moving away from the tried-and-true turn-based battle system. Do you think the turn-based battle system still has a place in the modern RPG?

I still love a great turn-based battle system myself, but lately we're seeing more franchises switch to action-focused combat. The biggest contemporary example is Final Fantasy XV, as we've seen in the recent Episode Duscae demo. Of course, some series (like Persona) appear to sticking to their roots, but this approach seems rarer as time goes on.

As much as I enjoy the thrill of an action battle system, I also revel in taking time to think out my actions and strategize. For decades, turn-based battle systems have been such a part of role-playing games' identity, being the main attraction in franchises like Dragon Quest, Suikoden, Might & Magic, and Shadow Hearts.

Do you still enjoy turn-based battle systems in RPGs? What do you think can be improved with them?
