Windows 10 Coming This Summer

by Matthew Kato on Mar 18, 2015 at 04:37 AM

At a Windows event in China today, Microsoft announced that the free Windows 10 OS will be available this summer around the globe.

Microsoft did not state a specific release date for the operating system.

Given the locale, Microsoft naturally talked about what it was going to do for the Chinese market. This includes a free upgrade pack with Windows 10 from Tencent – the multi-faceted Chinese online services company that owns majority equity in League of Legends' Riot Games. The pack includes QQ (Tencent's instant messaging software), Tencent Video, and Tencent PC Manager.

Microsoft also debuted Windows Hello, Windows 10 authentication technology that uses face, iris, or fingerprint recognition to unlock your devices. The company says that it's currently working with its partners for Windows Hello-compatible hardware by the time Windows 10 launches.

Our Take
It will be interesting to see if Windows 10's synergy with the Xbox One – including game streaming from the Xbox One – influences the fortunes of the home console now that it's out in the country.
