This Week In Mobile: Strategy, Scares, And Starships

by Elise Favis on Mar 13, 2015 at 11:05 AM

Variety is abundant this week, from horror games with animatronics to Sid Meier's tactical gameplay in the stars. Meanwhile, Card Crawl adds a twist to traditional Solitaire and Paper Monsters Recut introduces a whimsical paper world. Here are this week's mobile picks.

Five Nights at Freddy's 3
Developer: Scott Cawthorn
Platform: Android, iOS, Windows Phone
Price: $2.99

The hit survival horror point-and-click game is back with a new story. It's been 30 years since Freddy Fazbear's Pizza shut its doors, and the strange occurrences from the restaurant have faded into mere legend. However, a local amusement park plans to revive the legend, with Fazbear's Fright: The Horror Attraction. As a security guard for the attraction, your job is to monitor the cameras through five nights - that is, if you can survive that long. After completing the fifth night, a bonus night is unlocked. Be careful, because not everything is what it seems as this legend turns into a horrible, animatronic-filled reality.

Sid Meier's Starships
Developer: Sid Meier, Firaxis Games
Platform: iOS
Price: $14.99

Sid Meier's new strategy game, Starships, has you fighting against space enemies like pirates and marauders, while travelling through the stars. Strengthen your fleet, expand the influence of your federation, and protect the home world. The game includes tactical space combat, customizable ships, and cross-connectivity with the game Beyond Earth. Sid Meier's Starships has also released on Mac and PC, and you can read our review here.

Paper Monsters Recut
Developer: Crescent Moon Games
Platform: iOS
Price: $4.99

Paper Monster's Recut has a world much like Tearaway's, with a cardboard hero and paper-thin trees. This platformer has beautifully crafted 3D graphics, with detailed lighting and comical characters. Guide your adventurer through origami and papier maché levels that are rich with secrets to discover. Many power-ups can be gained along the way, such as lasers, submarines, and jetpacks. The game is a sequel to the original Paper Monsters that released in 2012. The new Paper Monsters Recut is also available on PC and Wii U.

Card Crawl
Developer: Arnold Rauers
Platform: iOS
Price: $1.99

This card-based dungeon crawler plays a lot like Solitaire with a modified deck. The cards are filled with items you would normally find in a dungeon, such as swords and potions, which help you slay your dragon opponents. With such a unique premise, it offers a refreshing take on standard card games and tactical RPGs alike.
