Destiny’s Weekly Heroic Strikes Will Soon Feature Mandatory Matchmaking

by Mike Futter on Feb 19, 2015 at 11:45 AM

Each week, Destiny features a more difficult version of one of the game’s strikes. Why would you subject yourself to that? For one of the most important currencies in the game of course: strange coins.

On Fridays, we post a list of what the wandering merchant Xur has to offer. For most items, he only accepts the coins.

Things are changing in the weekly heroic strikes when Bungie drops the next patch (still planned for some time in February). Loading one up will kick you into matchmaking, so you’ll have a team of three, even if your friends aren’t online.

Bungie says that the Nightfall strikes (which make your party restart if everyone dies) and raids won’t be getting matchmaking. The former won’t be happening, and the latter is still under consideration.

The upcoming patch will also fix the long-standing heavy ammo bug that robs players of the valuable ammunition upon death, cutscenes, or returning to orbit. When it drops, Xur will also have exotic engrams each week (giving your motes of light purpose once more) and there will be improvements to Iron Banner, strike and crucible playlists, and grimoire card drops.

Our Take
I’m glad that Bungie is planning for ways to reverse accidental and malicious data deletion, but that seems like something that should have been onboard from the start. This is an online, account-based game, and Bungie should have some measure of backing things up in case of failure (or naiveté).

I’m also still surprised how long the heavy ammo bug, playlist problems, and Xur issues have persisted. I’m a fan of Destiny, but some of this stuff has been hanging around for far too long.
