Windwalkers Kickstarter Seeks To Adapt Popular French Sci-Fi Novel

by Mike Futter on Feb 12, 2015 at 04:41 AM

Transmedia projects have had a rough ride when it comes to the video game components. Hawken hasn’t quite lived up to its promise and Trion Worlds’ Defiance fell on its face at launch. Now, another company is giving it a go on Kickstarter.

Windwalkers tells the story of the 34th (and probably final) horde of explorers seeking to find the source of devastating winds ravaging the world. Forge animation has worked with author Alain Damasio to adapt his science fiction novel La Horde du Contrevent (The Horde of the Counterwind) to envision an animated film, comic books, and a video game.

The Kickstarter campaign will fund the development of the game (already in progress on CryEngine 3) should it reach its $330,000 CAD ($261,743) goal. You can see footage in progress below (note that Forge Animation says that the demo below has already been revised and reworked.

The title is described as having elements of Dark Souls’ challenge, Journey’s wonder and exploration, and Left 4 Dead’s requirement of teamwork (though it will be playable solo with AI counterparts). You can learn more about the game via the Kickstarter page and a more in-depth video below.

Our Take
I think the budget for this game must go beyond the meager funds requested via Kickstarter. In the pitch video, investors are mentioned, and would certainly be required to accomplish the game segment with under $300,000 (not to mention the other components).

Still, I chose to share this because there is a prototype running on CryEngine and work seems to be in-progress on all three parts of the endeavor. The concept certainly seems unique, and even if the Kickstarter doesn’t reach its goal, I’m interested in investigating the source material.
