Former Rare Developers Form Playtonic Games, Announce Project Ukulele

by Kyle Hilliard on Feb 10, 2015 at 01:26 PM

A programmer on Donkey Kong Country, a character designer on Banjo-Kazooie, and other former Rare members have formed  new studio.

The studio is called Playtonic Games, and though the new studio has a website, there isn't much else to report on just yet. There is the teaser image you see above with the text, "Who's hiding in there?" and a presumed code name for a yet to be announced game called Project Ukulele. The only other element of the website close to a clue about Playtonic Games' game is the following paragraph:

Playtonic’s the name, and fun games, unique characters and absolutely-frickin-amazing worlds to explore are our game. Or at least they will be, once we eventually get around to releasing our first project instead of faffing around on WordPress.

For more on the new studio, you can check out its website here.

Our Take
An impressive resume of developers doesn't automatically equal amazing games, but Rare's lineage is a good one making Playtonic worth keeping an eye on. The two pairs of eyes and jungle leaves in the teaser image imply some sort of spiritual successor to Donkey Kong Country or Banjo Kazooie, but for all we know Project Ukelele could have absolutely nothing to do with either of those games. I'm certainly curious to learn more.
