Condemned Creator "Contemplating" Outsourcing Franchise

by Brian Shea on Feb 02, 2015 at 01:56 PM

Jace Hall, one of the creators of the Condemned franchise, took to Facebook today to gauge interest for a new entry in the series. The former CEO of Monolith Productions, who owns the IP, also expressed interest in giving the horror franchise over to a qualified independent development team since he is too busy to work on the series at the moment.

"There have been 2 game titles released for the franchise," Hall said in a Facebook post on his personal page. "They both did well, and I am consistently asked when a third game might be created. Since I am focused on other things, and will be for quite some time, this franchise is just sitting there."

Hall continued, bringing up the idea to outsource the development of a new entry in the series. "I am contemplating finding an interested and proven Indie development team AND PROVIDING IT TO THEM, so that they can take over the franchise and move it forward," he said. "As an indie, it can be very hard to get marketing/media attention for a title that you work on. This franchise is already quite known, has market demand, and is in an innovative genre/category."

Condemned: Criminal Origins launched alongside the Xbox 360 in 2005. The most recent entry, Condemned 2: Bloodshot, launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2008. Both entries to this point were developed by Monolith Productions.

Our Take
The Condemned franchise was always an underappreciated one, so if a worthy indie developer can be found to take the reins, we'd be all for it. It's great to see Jace Hall, a prominent figure who owns a known and loved IP, talk openly about finding an outside studio to continue work on it while he's too busy to do it himself. It's also pretty cool that he wants to use the opportunity to give publicity to a smaller team of proven independent developers. We'll certainly be keeping our eyes open for more news on this topic.
