Borderlands 2 Writer Anthony Burch Leaving Gearbox

by Mike Futter on Jan 30, 2015 at 04:49 AM

If you enjoyed the humor in Borderlands 2, you probably have Anthony Burch to thank. The writer behind the Vault Hunters, Tiny Tina, Claptrap, and the rest of the cast in the amusing sequel won’t be writing the next game in the series, though.

Burch announced on Twitter this morning that he will be departing Gearbox. This coincides with a new series announcement from Freddie Wong’s RocketJump (Video Game High School) and Hulu on which Burch will be lead writer.

The eight-episode program is described as a “long-form comedy series” that will follow the filmmaking of RocketJump’s short films. The series is a partnership of Wong’s RocketJump group, Hulu, and Lionsgate.

It’s also the first of RocketJump’s shows to premiere off YouTube and Hulu’s third original series in partnership with Lionsgate.

Our Take
This is a tough break for Gearbox, as the writing behind Borderlands is a key part of the allure. It also explains why the company has been recruiting for new writers recently (along with other positions as it ramps up toward Borderlands 3).
