New Pokken Tournament Footage Shows Pikachu, Power-Ups, And Partners

by Mike Futter on Jan 23, 2015 at 05:17 AM

Bandai Namco is finally giving us another look at its Pokémon-themed fighter, Pokken Tournament. New characters have been unveiled, as well as new mechanics that give the game more of a Pokémon feel than was displayed in the reveal footage.

Joining the fight are Pikachu, Gardevoir, and Suicine. Pokken Tournament will feature mid-match ultra states that unlock powerful moves and partner characters that can be called into battle for brief appearances.

The controller for the game isn’t a traditional arcade stick. Rather it looks like a simplified console controller with a D-pad and four face buttons.

The game is looking significantly better than it did in its lackluster reveal. Right now, Pokken Tournament is still just confirmed for arcade release in Japan (and not yet for North America).

Our Take
We suspect that a Wii U release might be in the cards. It would be lovely if Nintendo and Bandai Namco could ensure that the Gamecube controllers we all scrambled to get for Super Smash Bros. worked for the title if it does come to console.
