Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Edition Announced In Japan, ‘Overseas Release’ Planned

by Mike Futter on Jan 08, 2015 at 10:45 AM

Puzzle & Dragons, GungHo’s successful mobile Match-3 game, is coming to the 3DS. Release is confirmed for Japan, with a promise that other territories will see the game, also.

Nintendo announced last year that it would be teaming up for some licensing deals. This one makes a lot of sense for the company, given the success of the original mobile version of Puzzle & Dragons. GungHo is no stranger to crossovers, as Puzzle & Dragons has teamed up with Batman: Arkham Origins, DC Comics, Clash of Clans, Angry Birds, Monster Hunter, and more.

The game has seen over 6 million downloads in the North America alone, with worldwide installations of 41 million.  GungHo’s North American and European operations both report that the Nintendo version of the tile is going to see an “overseas release,” however Nintendo commented to Digital Spy that the announcement is only for Japan now.

We’ve reached out to Nintendo to get clarification and we’ll update should we receive a response. Given that the developer is stating that other territories will see the game, this may simply be an instance in which Nintendo would simply prefer to make a formal announcement rather than simply confirm.

Our Take
If Nintendo is going to license its most valuable assets, partnering with another property that has a proven track record is a smart move. We’re starting to see more willingness to blend brands, and this one seems to be a low-risk opportunity that gives Nintendo more control since the game is going to appear on its own platform (and not mobile devices).
