BioShock Lead Designer Paul Hellquist Joins Robot Entertainment

by Mike Futter on Jan 06, 2015 at 07:30 AM

Robot Entertainment has announced the hiring of Paul Hellquist, a veteran of Irrational Games and Gearbox Software. Hellquist will serve as lead designer at the studio, which is currently working on Orcs Must Die Unchained, a MOBA-like spinoff to the action heavy, tower-defense series.

Prior to joining Robot Entertainment, Hellquist worked at Gearbox for seven years, where he served as the creative director on Borderlands 2. Prior to his time developing the shoot-and-loot title, he was creative director on BioShock at Irrational Games.

“It’s always difficult to leave a place you’ve spent a huge chunk of your career, but it is always exciting as well,” he says. “Robot has a great track record and I’m thrilled to join the talented and veteran team. I look forward to adding my perspective and skills to Orcs Must Die! Unchained and future projects.”

Hellquist was not working on Battleborn at Gearbox (at least as of our visit for the August 2014 cover). During that trip, studio head Randy Pitchford told us that his company was also working on Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel with 2K Australia, the HD update to Homeworld (acquired from a THQ auction), and a new, unannounced IP.

Orcs Must Die Unchained is currently in beta on PC, and was recently announced for PlayStation 4. For more on Orcs Must Die Unchained, you can check out our preview from Gamescom. You can also see the game in action in our Test Chamber

Our Take
Hellquist has a strong resume, and brings a lot to Robot Entertainment. I’ve enjoyed what I’ve played of Orcs Must Die Unchained, and while I’m sure he’ll contribute to that team, I’m most excited to see what he works on next.
