Maniac Mansion Successor Thimbleweed Park Surpasses Kickstarter Goal

by Ben Reeves on Dec 22, 2014 at 07:37 AM

Point-and-click adventure-game throwback Thimbleweed Park earned a great deal more money that its developers were hoping for, meaning that the game will now be coming to iOS and Android devices. Now all the developers have to do it finish their game.

Last month, Maniac Mansion creators Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick teamed up and released a Kickstarter to raise money to design a new adventure game in the style of the fan-favorite Maniac Mansion. The duo were hoping to nab $375,000 from backers but ended up raising more than $625,000 from 15,623 individuals. That’s the burden of being popular.

Similar to Maniac Mansion, Thimbleweed Park will let players switch among multiple characters as they solve a mystery surrounding a dead body under a bridge. Gilbert and Winnick will use the extra cash to give the game full voice acting and port the title over to iOS and Android devices.

Our Take
I never got into Maniac Mansion, but I have a lot of friends and coworkers who won't shut up about that game, which makes me think I should go back and play it. Maybe the release of Thimbleweed Park is the thing to get me to go back and play it. I just hope this is one of those Kickstarter projects that actually follows through with their promise.
