Angry Birds Developer Rovio Lays Off Fewer Than Expected

by Mike Futter on Dec 04, 2014 at 04:43 AM

In October, Angry Birds devloper Rovio announced layoffs amounting to 15 percent of the company’s workforce. The impact is less than that, with 110 (rather than 130) employees affected.

In addition to the layoffs, the company is also closing one of its studios. Its Finland operations will be consolidated, and the developer’s Tampere location will be shuttered.

Rovio recently launched two new titles in the Angry Birds line, including a licensing deal with Hasbro for Angry Birds Transformers. The company is also working on a movie starring Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Peter Dinklage, and Maya Rudolph.

Our Take
These cuts are still severe, amounting to over 12 percent of Rovio’s workforce. The company has built itself upon one major franchise and must diversify in order to succeed in the long-term.
