Super Smash Bros. For Wii U Sells Over 490,000 In First Three Days

by Mike Futter on Nov 25, 2014 at 02:11 AM

Nintendo is reporting strong sales for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The publisher says that the game has sold over 490,000 units combined across physical and digital in the United States during the first three days of availability.

This makes Super Smash Bros. for Wii U the fastest selling game for the system in the United States. It beat out Mario Kart 8 in our territory, but still has a way to go to dethrone the racer overall.

In Mario Kart 8’s first three days on the market earlier this year, it sold 1.2 million units worldwide. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U arrives in Europe on November 18 and Japan on December 6, so we’ll be waiting to see how the mascot brawler fares across the globe. The reported numbers do not include the rest of the North American territory.

The 3DS version crossed the 1 million mark worldwide earlier this month. For more on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, check out our review.

Our Take
There is a strong chance that we’ll be reporting Super Smash Bros. for Wii U joining the million-seller club once it arrives in Europe. It won’t be until it’s out worldwide that we’ll be able to stack it against Mario Kart, though. I’m also interested to see if Super Smash Bros. pulls in new owners or simply caters to those that already own a Wii U.
