Far Cry 4 Director Embarks On A Personal Project At Ubisoft

by Mike Futter on Nov 19, 2014 at 07:30 AM

Now that Far Cry 4 is on retail shelves, director Alex Hutchinson is looking toward his next project. When we spoke to him during our month of coverage for the July issue, he mentioned something he’d been working on in between Assassin’s Creed 3 and his latest game.

“There’s all kinds of opportunities,” Hutchinson told us earlier this year. “The beauty of the little ones is there’s less pressure to sell. There’s less pressure to hit a really huge audience and a wide demographic. You can be a bit more esoteric. You can make a more unusual game. So there’s definitely interest in trying some smaller things.”

In a recent conversation with CVG, he confirms that he’ll be doing just that. “I've got clearance along with a bunch of people from AC3 and AC4 to go off and do something new after [Far Cry 4]," Hutchinson told CVG

This project follows in the footsteps of Child of Light and Valiant Hearts, two smaller games that Ubisoft has produced with the UbiArt Framework engine. For more, check out the full interview with Hutchinson from June, in which he discusses moving from Assassin’s Creed to Far Cry.

Our Take
Ubisoft may have had some stumbles with its AAA games lately, but it continues to innovate in the area of smaller, high quality games. Last year’s Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger set the stage for the publishers mini-AAA movement that I hope continues in 2015.
