You Can Pre-Order Super Smash Bros. Right Now, Pre-Loads Next Week

by Mike Futter on Nov 12, 2014 at 07:14 AM

Nintendo has announced that Super Smash Bros. is ready for digital pre-order on the eShop. This is the first title eligible through the program, which will eventually grow to include the 3DS.

For those that prefer not to enter their payment information into the console storefront, there is another option. Some retailers will be selling codes for the game that can be redeemed immediately so the game is ready on launch day.

Earlier today, Nintendo America president Reggie Fils-Aime shared that pre-orders of the title already eclipse those of Mario Kart 8. The title will also be the first to feature Amiibo toy support.

For more on Super Smash Bros., check out our extensive list of features from a recent Nintendo Direct and our Test Chamber of 8-player mayhem. The game will be out on November 21.

Note: Nintendo says that pre-loading will begin as early as Tuesday, November 18. Those that pre-order the game digitally will receive a code to start downloading the game. We've corrected the story to make that clearer and apologize for the confusion.

Our Take
Nintendo joining the pre-order/pre-load party is a major step for the Wii U. The company has been steadily increasing its online functionality, introducing DLC to its biggest titles. Hopefully this leads to an account-based game purchase system instead of one tied to the hardware.
