Microsoft Announces Almost 10 Million Xbox One Units Shipped

by Mike Futter on Nov 12, 2014 at 10:47 AM

Microsoft corporate vice president of marketing, strategy, and business has announced that the company has shipped almost 10 million Xbox One to retail. Sales have been motivated by a number of bundles throughout the fall.

Microsoft announced Sunset Overdrive and Call of Duty bundles at Gamescom. Later, the company packed in two different Assassin's Creed games at no additional cost.

Microsoft is still trailing Sony in the new-generation sales race. Sony reported that 13.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles were shipped as of September 30. This puts total new-gen consoles at retail at over 30 million, including the most recent Wii U numbers.

Our Take
The video game industry is rapidly recovering from a down period in terms of hardware sales, though recent NPD reports suggest software uptake isn't moving quite as quickly. Publishers are also in the tricky spot of having to deliver titles that take the best advantage of new hardware and cater to an install base of millions of gamers that haven't yet upgraded.

I suspect that by the end of 2015, last-gen systems will largely fade into the background, as more new-gen consoles end up in living rooms around the world.
