[Update] Users Report YouTube, Booting Errors Following PlayStation 4 Update 2.0

by Mike Futter on Oct 29, 2014 at 08:45 AM

Update: Sony has responded to our inquiry regarding YouTube and rest mode problems following the update. As we mentioned earlier, these issues are not universal, but have been reported by a number of users.

"We’re aware of issues reported by some PS4 users following the release of PS4’s latest system software update, v 2.00," a Sony representative told us via email. "We’re investigating these issues and will provide an update once we have more information."

Original Story:

Sony’s latest update, codenamed Masamune, brings with it some oft-requested aesthetic and convenience features, including themes, YouTube, suspend and resume downloads, and Share Play. Unfortunately, there seem to be some kinks that need to be worked out.

There are reports in the official PlayStation forums that connecting the system to YouTube isn’t working for all users. We have been having this issue also, and reached out to Sony yesterday for comment. The company did not respond on this matter by the time of publication.

Another issue reported by some (and replicated by us) centers on the new “rest mode.” While it would seem that this feature is just a renamed version of “standby mode” from previous firmware versions, it’s causing some problems.

The hardware will occasionally fail to boot from rest mode. Controllers and touch-sensitive buttons on the face of the console are unresponsive, with a blinking yellow light indicating a problem.

We’ve reached out to Sony again regarding these issues. We’ll update should we receive a response.

Our Take
While Update 2.0 is certainly a big step for usability, Sony needs to fast-track 2.01 to fix the Rest Mode problem. As someone who has been quite happy with standby mode, not being able to put the PS4 in a low power state and charge the controller is a problem. Hopefully, Sony will respond to us regarding these two problems.
