Capcom Reports Drastic Fall-Off Of Sales, Operating Income In Second Quarter FY15

by Mike Futter on Oct 29, 2014 at 11:54 AM

Capcom has announced that sales for the second quarter of its current fiscal year have dipped dramatically compared to last year. The company reports a fall-off in revenue of 51.3 percent.

In second quarter last year, Capcom released Monster Hunter 4. Without a comparatively strong title this year, sales dropped considerably.

The publisher says that its releases in the quarter, Ultra Street Fighter IV and Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy (coming to North America in December) are performing well. Dead Rising 3 saw release on PC, giving that title a new boost.

As it stands, Capcom’s only holiday release in North America is the aforementioned Ace Attorney Trilogy. Next Year brings two Resident Evil titles (Revelations 2 and REmake HD) and Monster Hunter 4 to North America (Japan already has the “Ultimate” version, which was released on October 11).

The weak lineup led to sales of ¥16.3 billion ($151.32 million) for the quarter, compared to ¥35.8 billion ($331.3 million) in the same quarter last year. Net income dropped from ¥4.2 billion (38.2 million) in FY14 to ¥2.2 billion ($20.4 million) this year.

Of note, operating income was in the red for the quarter. Capcom posted operating losses of ¥8.25 billion ($76.7 million).

Our Take
Capcom is sitting on a stable of intellectual properties that gamers have been clamoring for. It’s great to see Mega Man in Smash Bros., but fans have been begging for a game with the blue bomber at the center for years. They’ll be getting something close, but not from Capcom. It took Keiji Inafune Kickstarting Mighty No. 9 to bring that style of gameplay back.

Most importantly, the publisher needs to start filling the release schedule. You can't sell what you don't publish.
