Awesome Games Done Quick Charity Speedrunning Marathon Schedule Announced

by Mike Futter on Oct 23, 2014 at 05:48 AM

There are a lot of reasons people play games. Some dive in for relaxation, others to connect with friends, and some for thrills and excitement. And then there are speedrunners, a group of gamers that challenge themselves to blast through games as fast as they possibly can.

Each year, a group of these streamers get together under the banner of Awesome Games Done Quick to raise money for charity. And if they happen to put on a good show during the process? That’s just fine.

At the start of 2014, the week-long marathon raised over $1 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. In June, the team raised over $700,000 for Doctors Without Borders during Summer Games Done Quick (over 10 percent of which was earned from a partnership with Humble Bundle).

The next Awesome Games Done Quick will take place from January 4 through 10, with proceeds going once again to the Prevent Cancer Foundation. A preliminary schedule for the week includes the devilishly difficult Battletoads, a collection of Mega man titles, the absurd Burger King promo game Sneak King, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and even Dark Souls II.

Note that the schedule is likely to change a bit between now and the event. You can see what’s on the tentative schedule here

Our Take
It’s efforts like this one that remind me why I’m proud to be a gamer. Each year, members of our community come together to raise money for charity in so many different ways, including Extra Life (this weekend!). And even if you’re just interested in the spectacle, speedrunning can be quite a show.
