This Week In Mobile – Slash, Smash, Crash

by Matthew Stolpe on Oct 17, 2014 at 10:31 AM

This week’s mobile highlights offer a good spread of genres and styles of play. From side-scrolling shooting to strategic trading card gameplay, there’s something for players of all speeds.

Hail to the King: Deathbat
Developer:  Subscience Studios
Platform: iOS, Android
Price: $4.99

Hail to the King: Deathbat comes to straight to you from the minds Avenged Sevenfold. The third person dungeon crawler explores the origins of Deathbat, the creature that serves as the band’s mascot. You play as Andronikos, the dark embodiment of Deathbat, as you hack-and-slash your way through levels inspired by Avenged Sevenfold’s discography. The band even composed an original score in the vein of 8-bit adventure games like Castlevania. Deathbat features a 10-12 hour campaign and encourages replays with unlockable items and an even more difficult Nightmare mode.

Angry Birds Transformers
Developer: Rovio Entertainment Ltd.
Platforms: iOS
Price: Free (In-App Purchases)

Angry Birds is stepping into the high-tech, action-packed world of Transformers, because having games based on just one juggernaut nostalgic franchise simply isn’t enough. Angry Birds Transformers marks a significant departure from the franchise’s tried-and-true formula. You play as auto-side-scrolling Autobirds and Deceptihogs, firing lasers with the tap of your finger at the EggBot’s precariously built towers, rather than strategically launching birds into the structures. There’s a lot to love here for die-hard Transformers fans, from a wide cast of fan-favorite characters to an electronic soundtrack by Vince DiCola, the composer of Transformers: The Movie. It even sports a nifty animated intro that looks like it was ripped straight from the 80s. You can also watch Game Informer’s Andrew Reiner and Matt Miller preview the game in Test Chamber.

NBA 2K15
Developer: 2K Games Inc.
Platforms: iOS, Android (Amazon-device Exclusive)
Price: $7.99

NBA 2K15 takes the experience of the hallmark basketball series and brings it to mobile devices. 2K15 touts a significant graphics and animations update from its mobile predecessor NBA 2K14, as well as more refined My Career and Quick Game modes. You can jam out to a soundtrack curated by the ever-endearing Pharrell Williams, too. If mobile controls aren’t your thing, then fret not. 2K15 features both controller support and virtual controller sizing options, meaning you’ll be able to bring out best game however you play.

Adrenaline Rush: Miami Drive
Developer: Bulkypix
Platforms: iOS
Price: Free

Create the highway traffic jam you’ve always wanted to in Adrenaline Rush: Miami Drive. As driver Ray Carlton, you’ll plow through cars at blistering speeds, picking up coins and power-ups along the way. Adrenaline Rush’s cel-shaded graphics and smooth '80s stylings make it one of the prettier titles on this list. Car aficionados can get their own rush just from this game’s selection of vehicles and customization options.

Sentinels of the Multiverse
Developer: Handelabra Studio
Platforms: iOS, Android
Price: $9.99

Sentinels of the Multiverse offers a little something for comics fans and collectors alike. This superhero-themed, co-op card game plays out like a moving comic book where players team up as superheros to take down villains. Theses battles play out in diverse settings like the Ruins of Atlantis and Megalopolis, which all come complete with their own ambient music. With 10 heroes, 4 villains, and 4 environments, the number of unique matches you can have is literally over 9,000
