This Week In Mobile – RPGs, Zombies, and Match Threes

by Sam Stewart on Oct 10, 2014 at 09:06 AM

This week's mobile offerings include ports of a couple of ports of popular RPG titles, some variations on the match three puzzle genre, and, of course, some zombie racing.

Terra Battle
Developer: Mistwalker Corporation
Platforms: iOS, Android
Price: Free (In-App Purchases)

Terra Battle is the newest game from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi’s game company MIstwalker. It’s a free-to-play Strategy RPG that puts a twist on matching puzzle games. Instead of matching same-colored pieces you try to match your units with enemies. Any time you manage to surround an enemy piece (enemy in middle, your pieces on each side) you initiate an attack. Attacks get stronger based on a variety of factors (weapon type, other allies in your row, positioning of a power orb), adding a lot of complexity to what seems like a simple strategy game.

Dragon Quest II
Developer: Square-Enix
Platforms: iOS, Android
Price: $4.99

Square-Enix has been systematically releasing all of the Dragon Quest games on mobile over the last year, and the newest addition to the line-up is Dragon Quest II. Set 100 years after the original game, Dragon Quest II follows the Prince of Lorasia on his quest to vanquish an evil wizard and return peace to his kingdom. Dragon Quest II is the first game in the series to have multiple party members and have battles with multiple enemies. The game has simple one-touch controls that allow it to be played with one hand for some quick level grinding on the go.

Banner Saga
Developer: Stoic LLC
Platforms: iOS
Price: $9.99

Stoic LLC’s Banner Saga was lauded for its beautiful animated graphics, wonderful soundtrack, and meaningful story. Now the Strategy RPG has come to mobile and hasn’t lost any of its quality along the way. The game is being released in episodes, and the first follows the story of an army sent to battle a warlike race known as the Dredge, with your decisions shaping the narrative.

Zombie Highway 2
Developer: Auxbrain Inc.
Platforms: iOS
Price: Free (In-App Purchases)

Zombie Highway 2 is a fun mix of two popular genres: zombies and racing. You race your car through the both urban and rural environments, trying to avoid the zombies that attack you along the way. As they latch on to your vehicle you need to shake them off, either by slamming them into nearby obstacles, or using weapons like flamethrowers. Each run earns you money that can be used towards new upgrades for your vehicle, helping you get farther and farther on the zombie highway.

Adventure Xpress
Developer: PikPok Games
Platforms: iOS
Price: Free (In-App Purchases)

Adventure Xpress is the newest offering from Adult Swim Games. You play the role of a mailman in a medieval setting, and it is your job to deliver important messages all over the country. Sometimes enemies will get in your way, but you will easily dispatch them thanks to your match three puzzle skills. Styled like a turn-based RPG, you attack by matching runes. Runes represent different elements that you can use to exploit enemy weakness. These battles are accompanied by charming cartoon graphics and goofy writing.
