Free New-Gen Upgrade Available For Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare

by Joe Juba on Oct 08, 2014 at 09:34 AM

For gamers who start playing Advanced Warfare on the PS3 or Xbox 360, Activision is offering the chance to upgrade to the new-gen versions for free – assuming you buy the game digitally.

The deal is pretty simple: If you purchase Advanced Warfare through Xbox Live or the PlayStation Store for a last-gen system, you can upgrade to the new-gen version for free. As long as you purchase the digital PS3 or 360 version by March 31, 2015, you're eligible. It doesn't work with the physical versions of the game, however.

For instance, let's say you don't have a Xbox One yet, but plan on getting one in the near future (or receiving one as a gift). In that case, you can download Advanced Warfare for the 360 and start playing, then upgrade later. You have to stick with either Microsoft or Sony, though; you can't buy the PS3 version and then upgrade to Xbox One.

The transfer doesn't wipe your progress completely; your multiplayer stats and in-game DLC make the transition with you.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare releases on November 4 for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360, and PC. For more on the game, check out our month of extensive Advanced Warfare coverage.

Our Take
This seems like a pretty smart move, since there are undoubtedly some gamers who, anticipating new consoles, would have held off on buying Advanced Warfare on day one. This gets everyone in on the ground floor and lets them trade up later. It would have been nice to see this apply to physical versions too, but there's more cost involved in producing those copies and getting them on store shelves.
