Diablo III 2.1 Update Brings Greater Rifts, Legendary Gems To Consoles

by Mike Futter on Oct 08, 2014 at 02:42 AM

Update: The patch is live for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One according to Blizzard. In a post on Blizzard's forums, an employee by the user ID of "Araxom" reiterates that new-gen console versions of the game will receive patches that will keep pace (though slightly later) with the PC version. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions will not be updated with the same frequency.

Original Story:

Diablo III Ultimate Evil Edition is getting a boost today thanks to the new 2.1 patch. Right now, we know that the update has arrived on PlayStation 4, but we’ve inquired with Blizzard to get clarification on the other platforms.

Update 2.1 brings a number of new features and gameplay elements. If you’re a Diablo III player, chances are you’ve found yourself dropping everything to chase after treasure goblins when they appear.

Now, sometimes those little rascals will open a portal for you when you kill them. These will take you to a treasure-filled realm called The Vault, where you’ll also fight a new boss, Baroness Greed.

Not all of the new areas are quite so shiny, though. Next time you step through a rift, you might find yourself in a location called The Cesspool. As you can tell, this sewer location is probably not terribly sanitary. Good thing you (probably) have health potions.

Greater rifts also come to consoles in this patch. These are timed rifts that award upgrades to your legendary gems or the option to continue to the next, more difficult level. The second option only emerges if you get through before the timer ticks down to zero. Legendary gems are new varieties that enhance rings and amulets.

Finally, you might find a new consumable item in your travels. Ramaldini’s Gift is a legendary drop that can add a socket to a weapon that doesn’t have one.

Again, this update has been confirmed for PlayStation 4. We’ll update with news on Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 versions as we learn more. For more on Diablo III Ultimate Evil Edition, check out our review.

Our Take
Blizzard is working to keep the console versions of Ultimate Evil Edition in line with Reaper of Souls on PC, and it's great to see these new features being added. I'm still amazed out how well Blizzard turned Diablo III around from a fairly unimpressive experience into something I love going back to over and over.
