Reader Discussion – What's The Worst Video Game Movie Ever?

by Tim Turi on Oct 02, 2014 at 12:30 PM

Earlier today, GI intern Matt Stolpe mused whether we should be excited for upcoming video game films like The Last of Us or Warcraft. The question is especially relevant given the film genre's nearly perfect batting average for being just awful. This got me thinking. I know what I think is the worst video game movie ever made, but I want to know what you consider the worst. Is it the infamous Super Mario Bros.? One of Uwe Boll's embarrassing disasters like Far Cry or Postal? We want to know what made you cringe.

To kick things off, I'll offer that my choice for worst video game movie ever is a tie between 2008's miserable Max Payne and 2012's Silent Hill Revelation. Max Payne gets extra credit (the bad kind) for bringing Mark Wahlberg into the picture, complete with weird hallucinations where dark angels appear or something. That was bad, but Silent Hill Revelation disappoints on a different level. I maintain that the first half hour or so of 2006's Silent Hill film is the best video game-based film that exists, and Revelation handily reverses any goodwill a fan might have for the series. Where Silent Hill's first act contains a carefully done monster reveal and gradual descent into a hellish landscape (complete with air raid siren), the sequel abandons all subtlety in exchange for a heavy-handed mutilation of Silent Hill 3. It's not ever worth recommending for novelty value.

So what would you consider the worst video game film ever? After you share your pick, take a deep dive into the true history behind the confusingly bad Super Mario Bros. film.
