Nintendo Announces Super Smash Bros. Tournaments Across United States
Super Smash Bros. on 3DS is out on October 3 (that’s next week). Just one day later, Nintendo and GameStop (Disclaimer: GameStop is Game Informer’s parent company.) will be hosting tournaments at 15 locations plus the Nintendo World Store in New York City.
The 64-player tournaments are first-come, first-served and you don’t need to pre-register. You can bring your own system and game, but if you don’t want to (or don’t have access), the necessary hardware will be provided for you.
Winners at each of the locations will go onto the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS National Open Tournament taking place on October 11 in New York City. If you happen to be in the Big Apple, you can also purchase the game early. A meet-up and early purchase opportunity is taking place at the Nintendo World Store on October 2 at 8 p.m. Eastern.
Local tournaments will take place at the following locations, beginning at 11 a.m. local time.

A demo of Super Smash Bros. 3DS is available now in the eShop. The title is out on October 3 everywhere, and you can check out the full roster (including unlockables) for more (if you want to be spoiled). A release date for the Wii U version has not yet been announced.

Nintendo is smart to highlight the competitive aspect of Smash, even on the smaller 3DS. That community has kept past titles vibrant for extended periods of time, and it’s this group that will help make Super Smash Bros. a success long after more casual fans (of which there are many) wind down their time with it.
