EA Sports Update Releases Features That Were Cut From NHL 15

by Mike Futter on Sep 23, 2014 at 10:49 AM

EA Sports has announced the availability of the first content update intended to restore missing modes and features to NHL 15. The patch includes one new mode, two new features, and improvements to Ultimate Team.

The September content update re-introduces Playoff Mode. This 16-team tournament mode allows you to create a custom offline tournament with NHL teams or squads from 12 other leagues.

Coach Feedback has been added to the RPG-lite Be a Pro mode. When you return to the bench, your coach will give you a grade on position, team play, and stats, as well as bullet point highlights. Unfortunately, the update does not include the ability to sim to your next shift. EA has also added back the Three Stars for the end of games, so you can see who top performers were.

Finally, Ultimate Team gets a menu overhaul, new animations, and better information display.

In the October update, EA is planning to add back Online Team Play and GM Draft. For more on NHL 15, check out our review of the series' disappointing inaugural outing on new-gen consoles.

Our Take
After NBA Live last year, there was a lot of hope that EA Sports had figured out it needed to ship complete games. NHL 15 is a disappointing reminder that as much as EA says it is “player first” these days, it is still shipping incomplete games with complete title prices.
