Blizzard Cancels Long In-Development MMO ‘Titan’

by Mike Futter on Sep 23, 2014 at 07:22 AM

World of Warcraft developer Blizzard has confirmed that it has ceased development on the never-quite-announced MMO codenamed “Titan.” The studio says the decision was “excruciating,” but that it made the decision after over four years of development in part to protect its relationship with its player base.

Speaking with Polygon, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime and senior vice president of story and franchise development Chris Metzen discussed the development process and the decision to pull the plug on the project even after rebooting it last year.

At Gamescom, Blizzard told us that it is working on World of Warcraft 2. However, in discussion with Polygon, Morhaime says that he hopes to support World of Warcraft 1 in perpetuity and that the company isn’t spending its time on another MMO right now.

Titan joins Starcraft Ghost and Warcraft Adventures as another high-profile title that the studio decided to move on from. Nova, the protagonist of Starcraft Ghost lives on in Blizzard’s in-development MOBA, Heroes of the Storm.

Our Take
Despite the expense and disappointment of high profile cancellations (even if Titan was never fully announced), Blizzard has learned when to back off a project. The interview with Polygon is a good look into how a decision like that comes to be, and at least on the surface, Titan’s cancelation seems to be for the right reasons.
