Introducing Apple Watch

by Andrew Reiner on Sep 09, 2014 at 08:19 AM

Apple's press conference appeared to be over after many of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus' functions were detailed, but the show went on when the message "One more thing..." appeared onscreen. That one more thing is the Apple Watch.

This wearable device is customizable, allowing consumers to pick out the wristbands (leather, plastic, metal), and unit color. Additionally, Apple is shipping this product in two sizes and with three different finishes to choose from. Apple's Tim Cook says "Apple Watch has been curated into three editions: Apple Watch, Apple Watch: Sport, and Apple Watch: Edition."

The screen is made of sapphire (the second hardest transparent material next to the diamond), and can recognize the difference between a touch and tap. Similar swipe functionality to Apple's iPhone and iPad devices is also supported.

The dial on the right side of the Apple Watch is called the digital crown. It turns rotary movement into digital data, and allows users to zoom in and out and perform a wide degree of other functions. Cook says "Apple Watch is the most personal device we've ever created." Along with communication and interactive functions, the Apple Watch offers health and fitness options, giving users the chance to "share something as personal as your heartbeat." The Apple Watch is compatible with other Apple products. The iPhone is required with Apple Watch. It can be used with Apple TV, and allows people to chat through voice and text.

Apps include Facebook (notifications show up on the watch), Nike training, Pinterest, Siri, MLB, and Apple Maps. The newly announced Apple Pay works with Apple Watch.

No games were announced during the press event.
