Apple Reveals Two New iPhones

by Matt Bertz on Sep 09, 2014 at 07:19 AM

Today at its press conference in Cupertino, CA, Apple revealed two new iPhones.

The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 has a screen resolution of 1334 x 750. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6+ "phablet" features a full HD display. To take advantage of the bigger display, the home screens now work horizontally as well as vertically. They are also the thinnest phones Apple has ever made.

Both phones are powered by the new 64-bit A8 processor, which is 20-percent faster than the 5s. Graphics receive a 50 percent boost over the last phone as well, delivering game visuals on par with some of the latest Xbox Live games. Apple claims that despite the power increase, both phones have equal or better battery life than the 5s.

A new motion processor allows the phones to better track your fitness performance, as it's savvy enough to tell when you are walking, jogging, or cycling, as well as tracking elevation changes. Nike plans to leverage this new functionality with a new app.

To improve the wireless performance, the phones have 20 LTE bands, as well as a 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

One of the most-requested changes, the phones boast an improved 8MP camera with an f/2.2 aperture, new image sensor, true tone flash, and faster autofocus. Video fans should enjoy 1080p recording at both 30fps or 60fps.

An oft-rumored feature, Apple also revealed its ambitious attempt to kill off credit cards with a new mobile wallet solution called Apple Pay that uses NPF, Touch iD, and a Secure Element chip. Apple Pay allows you to store American Express, Master Card, Visa, and other cards right on your phone with encrypted security.

Both phones come in gold, silver, and "space gray." The iPhone 6 16GB version will cost you $199. The 64GB version costs $299, and the 128GB version will set you back $399. The iPhone 6+ starts at $299 for 16GB, then rises to $399 for 64GB, and $499 for 128GB. Look for the phones in stores on September 19 (pre-orders start on Friday), and you can start downloading iOS 8 on September 17.
