World Of Tanks Targets Players Old And New

by Daniel Tack on Sep 02, 2014 at 06:00 AM

Wargaming’s World of Tanks is highlighting the new Stronghold experience, a clan/guild wars style system that we took a look at during PAX Prime 2014. In a nutshell, the system allows new players to team up and participate for additional rewards, and veterans to form competitive clans to compete to be the best of the best.

There are some similarities in the Stronghold system to popular mobile title Clash of Clans - Your clan will wage war against others, build up a base that provides bonuses and rewards, and compete. It’s a system that’s designed to be welcoming to newcomers to the game, providing them with extra resources and teammates for matches.

Strongholds also add an endgame to retain the grizzled veterans, as they strive to control the map and take home the best possible rewards. Everyone involved in Stronghold wars gets some perks, so it’s a system with a bit of a social backbone that gives additional incentives to play for all levels of engagement, from the casual weekend warrior to the hardcore specialist.

While World of Tanks is often known for its online “single synchronous session” play that allows players to pop on, get in a match, play until disaster strikes and then hop into a new game fast, Strongholds provide players with more motivation to engage in teamplay and tangible progression outside of the single match reward loop.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Stronghold/Clash of Clans style features come to more multiplayer-centric titles in the near future. While there are no current plans to take the system into World of Warplanes or World of Warships, Wargaming will see how things work out in World of Tanks and go from there.
