[Update] Rumor: Super Smash Bros. Videos Reveal Two Unannounced Characters

by Mike Futter on Aug 25, 2014 at 10:28 AM

Update #2: Nintendo has issued copyright claims on the videos showing the two characters in action.

Update #1: Nintendo has responded to our request for comment on the leaked character videos. "We have nothing to announce at this time," a representative told us via email. "For the list of announced playable characters for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS please visit: www.smashbros.com."

Original Story:

We’re just five weeks away from the release of Super Smash Bros. on 3DS, and there are still some secrets that haven’t been revealed by Nintendo. Now, videos have emerged through unofficial channels that depict two unannounced characters brawling in the handheld version.

If you’d prefer to avoid having part of the roster spoiled, now’s a great time to back out. Otherwise, here we go.

According to the videos below, Xenoblade Chronicles’ Shulk and Super Mario Bros.’ Bowser Jr. are joining the fight. The tiny Koopaling in his clown car is an interesting choice, but despite being in a vehicle, he seems to move similar to other flyers.

Additionally, NeoGAF posters have compiled what seem to be images of a majority of the roster. The pictures include unannounced characters, including the Duck Hunt dog and returning fighters R.O.B. and Ness.

We’ve reached out to Nintendo for a statement, and we’ll update should we receive a response. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is due out on October 3. The game is also coming to Wii U, but Nintendo has yet to pin down a release date.

Our Take
The videos are compelling, as they would take extensive work to fake. If they are the work of a modder, I’m not ashamed to be impressed by the effort. I continue to take the images (viewable on the NeoGAF source link) with a (shrinking) grain of salt.
