Xbox One ‘Free Play Day’ Posting Made ‘In Error’

by Mike Futter on Aug 21, 2014 at 08:39 AM

Recently, a new promotion appeared on Xbox Live hinting at a new benefit for Gold members. It seems like Microsoft is preparing to offer 24-hour trials of some games, but the publisher isn’t offering details or even confirmation that this will reach wide release.

A Reddit user by the name of “JBurton90” posted an image of an Xbox One dashboard tile for Max and the Curse of Brotherhood bearing the term “Free Play Day with Gold.” We reached out to the company to find out more.

“A promotional tile for ‘Max: Curse of the Brotherhood’ was posted briefly on the US dash in error yesterday,” a Microsoft spokesperson told us via email. “We apologize for any inconvenience. We’re constantly exploring different ways to offer more benefits to our Xbox Live Gold members and will keep them updated when special offers become available.”

Microsoft is currently testing its September update with preview users and has shared some of the items to come in October. It’s possible that “Free Play Day” is in the conceptual phase for a later monthly update or may just be a very early idea that made its way to the wrong server.

Our Take
If this does materialize as a real feature, expect Microsoft to promote it heavily. Demos are becoming less common, and this would be a move that benefits consumers.
