Assassin’s Creed Memories Launches On iOS

by Matt Miller on Aug 21, 2014 at 01:31 PM

While it might not be either of the Assassin’s Creed games players were expecting to play next, Ubisoft (in partnership with PlayNext and Gree) passed along word today about a new mobile entry in the history-spanning epic of Assassin’s Creed. Assassin’s Creed Memories is a free-to-play title that combines card collection and battling, target chasing, and strategy elements, along with the option to engage in competitive multiplayer against fellow players.

Assassin’s Creed Memories is available right now on iPhone, iPad, and iPad Touch. The game is fully playable from start to finish without paying anything, but does require an internet connection, and includes in-app purchases to accelerate progression through the game. The game has players hopping between different historical eras, including established settings like the Third Crusade (the original Assassin’s Creed) and the golden age of piracy (Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag), as well as relatively lesser detailed locations within the fiction, like feudal Japan and the Mongolian Empire.

Ubisoft’s new mobile title also includes multiplayer options, allowing players to join a guild and then engage in 20v20 guild combat scenarios.

Our Take
The announcement  of Assassin’s Creed: Memories comes out of left field, but it’s not exactly unexpected. Ubisoft has prided itself on a broad, cross-media approach to its flagship franchise, with books, fiction guides, short films, and even a theatrical movie on the way – all of which are geared to expanding the brand’s reach. This mobile title is another branch of the tree. I’m skeptical of the free-to-play nature of the AC Memories, but hopeful that there might be some cool explorations of the fiction mixed into the experience.
