High Moon Studios Confirmed To Be Handling Last-Gen Versions Of Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare

by Mike Futter on Aug 20, 2014 at 01:38 PM

We recently had the chance to catch up with Sledgehammer Games as the studio unveiled the multiplayer for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. In a brief conversation with studio co-founders Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, we learned who will be handling the last-gen versions.

“Sledgehammer Games has been focused, from day one, on delivering a true next generation Call of Duty experience for the new consoles, specifically the Xbox One, PS4, and high end PCs,” they told us. “Our focus is on innovation for the franchise, unrestricted by last generation hardware constraints, and the additional third year of development has allowed the team to make bold decisions to deliver on a new era in Advance Warfare.”

Sledgehammer won’t be handling the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, though (we learned this morning the title won't be on Wii U). Those duties have been handed off to another of Activision’s studios.

“Current gen is also going to be great - the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms are being developed by the talented team at High Moon Studios,” they said. “They are committed to bringing an incredible X360 and PS3 Call of Duty game to fans. We've been working closely with those guys to ensure players get an awesome Call of Duty experience on all platforms.”

High Moon Studios is best known for its two well-received Transformers games, War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron. The studio also released a game based on Marvel’s Deadpool in 2013.

Sledgehammer is also getting assistance from another veteran Call of Duty studio. “The Sledgehammer Games team was able to leverage talent across the company after last year’s game shipped, including the team at Raven Software to help deliver against our three year vision for Advanced Warfare,” the duo told us. Raven is currently working on Call of Duty Online for the Chinese market, and has played a role in the franchise since 2010 with Call of Duty: Black Ops DLC.

Our Take
As a fan of the Transformers games High Moon created, I’m glad to hear that they are involved. Activision’s approach to Call of Duty is an expanding network of studios, which also helps keep development teams employed between major projects. As we continue through the console transition, expect to keep hearing about secondary teams handling last-gen ports.
