Destiny's The Dark Below Expansion Was Almost Uncovered In 2013

by Mike Futter on Aug 16, 2014 at 05:05 AM

Tricky, tricky, Activision. About a year ago, right before Blizzard unveiled the Reaper of Souls expansion for Diablo III, a reader tipped us off about a potential name for the expansion: The Dark Below. It turns out, the trademark filing was for something completely different.

Now we know just what The Dark Below is (and have for a few weeks now). It's Destiny's first expansion, and it will include new story, multiplayer, and activities.

The Dark Below was trademarked before Warlords of Draenor (the next World of Warcraft expansion) was announced, which gave us another red herring for a few months. As time passed, the story faded into memory, as companies trademark things all the time.

In this case though, it turns out that Activision made a smart move and let Blizzard handle the application. Had the Activision side of the business submitted the filing, we're pretty confident we would have suspected a link to Destiny rather quickly. The Dark Below just doesn't sound like a Call of Duty or Skylanders name.

For more on Destiny, check out a new interview with production director Jonty Barnes and senior designer Derek Carroll. Destiny will be out on September 9 on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3. The Dark Below, Destiny's first expansion, will arrive in December.
