Destiny Beta Characters Will Not Transfer To The Final Game

by Kyle Hilliard on Aug 10, 2014 at 09:56 AM

Confirming the suspicions we've had since the game was announced to be receiving a beta, the characters created during Destiny's beta will not transfer to the final game.

If you participated in the beta, you won't start Destiny completely empty-handed, but you will have to start your character from scratch. We were all fairly certain this was going to happen, but Bungie recently confirmed it, just to make sure there was no confusion. Bungie designer Tyson Green also offered an explanation as to why:

Since the Beta, we’ve continued to tune and adjust the game. The way you earn experience has been adjusted up and down a bunch of times. Items have been added and removed. New features toggled. Although there’s no single monumental change, the sum of the tweaks leaves characters from the Beta Build in strange shape that would be confusing at best, broken at worst.

Destiny releases September 9 for Xbox One and Xbox 360, and PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 – at which point you will be able to hold onto your progress permanently.

Our Take
This is no surprise, so it's hard to even call it a disappointment. I went into the beta confident all of my progress would be wiped at the end, which is why I actually didn't play that much. Everything I played during the beta, I figured I would have to redo in a matter of months, so I only played a little bit. I can't wait to dive back in, though.
